Yeast Infections

Womens Health

Yeast Infections affect approximately 75% of all women at one point in their lives and over 50% get more than one.  So, it’s important for women to understand keys to prevention & a quick recovery!

While a small amount of yeast is typically present (controlled by the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus), infections are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida Albicans or an imbalance of “good” bacteria.  Sometimes it’s difficult to know what triggers a yeast infection, but an increased risk can come from stress, insomnia, illness, poor diet, pregnancy, hormonal changes, certain medications, and immune related disease.

Tips to naturally prevent & speed recovery from a yeast infection:

  • Avoid eating too much sugar in your diet (especially if you already have an increased risk as a diabetic)
  • Boost your immune system with Olive Leaf Extract
  • Stay well rested (or try Heel Neurexan if you have trouble sleeping)
  • Eliminate unnatural perfumes & dyes in hygiene products
  • Incorporate garlic into your diet or take garlic pills (garlic is a natural enemy of yeast)
  • Drink PLENTY of water – at least 64 oz each day

Yeast will significantly decrease the absorption of nutrients in your body, so remember to eat well balanced meals or take a nutritional supplement.

Supplements: Synthetic vs. Whole Food

While we might try our hardest, it’s difficult to ensure our bodies are getting enough vitamins & minerals to support optimal mental & physical health through diet alone.  It’s estimated that over 90% of the population suffers from a deficiency  of one or more vitamins & minerals, so we recommend taking a whole food based supplement (Truehope CNE).

Understanding the difference between synthetically created and whole food based supplements is critical.  Your body only absorbs approximately 50% of the synthetically created vitamins and oftentimes you don’t get the proper balance required by your body.  Over time, the imbalance can lead to other health problems – defeating the purpose of taking the supplements in the first place!  Whole food based supplements are derived from foods we eat, meaning your body can more easily absorb and process the nutrients.  You might hear the word “chelated” to describe a mineral supplement.  This simply means that the mineral is “firmly attached” to the amino acid or organic compound and do not break apart during digestion.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 DietResearch has shown that Omega-3 Fatty Acids boost levels of the neurotransmitter Serotonin in the brain, which is critical in maintenance of mental and physical health.  Here’s a quick science lesson:  Neurotransmitters are chemicals in the brain that are responsible for controlling communication between and within neurons.  To date, scientists have identified over 50 different neurotransmitters in the human brain.  Without neurotransmitters, your brain would not be able to give direction to the rest of your body for functions as critical as a heart beat, touch sensitivity, and taking a breath. The neurotransmitter Serotonin is specifically responsible for  controlling things like appetite, mood, emotion, body temperature, and onset of sleep.  So, it’s easy to see why maintaining a proper chemical balance in the brain is important for treatment of mental health related issues, eating disorders, and insomnia.  Also, those deprived of Omega-3 Fatty Acids for two or more generations could have offspring that cannot release Dopamine and Serotonin effectively.

Fortunately, there are natural ways to bring your Serotonin levels into balance!  Safe and effective Omega-3 supplements (we prefer the Nutri-West brand – they also carry a children’s chewable version)  when combined with a proper diet can significantly improve or eliminate suffering from symptoms caused by Bipolar, Depression, Insomnia, and much more.

In addition to an Omega-3 supplement, here is a list of foods to start incorporating into your diet:

  • Fish (come back soon because we’ll be posting a list of fish that are safe from high levels of mercury and other contaminants)
  • Flax Seeds
  • Eggs (look for eggs marked with “Omega-3″ rich labels, chickens fed on a grain diet have a lower concentration)
  • Walnuts
  • Tofu (raw)
  • Winter Squash (baked)

Trouble Sleeping?

If you have trouble sleeping, you’re not the only one. It’s been estimated that between 50-70 million Americans suffer from some form of insomnia, whether it’s from an overactive mind or another physical ailment. Over time, chronic insomnia can lead to major physical issues like an increased risk for disease (cancer, diabetes, obesity) and wreak havoc your mental health and stability.

Many people who suffer from chronic insomnia turn to pharmaceutical remedies, but oftentimes these come with a long list of side-effects or risk of addiction. We recommend trying natural solutions first.

  • Meditation:  Learning to meditate doesn’t happen overnight, but with practice it can be highly effective in helping your body to relax at the end of the day and put your active mind to rest before bedtime.  In addition to helping with sleep, meditation can help lower blood pressure!
  • Yoga:  According to a Harvard study, daily yoga for eight weeks improved both total sleep time reduced time to fall asleep.  Can be easily combined with a meditation practice.
  • Eating Habits:  Avoid caffeine & sweets during the evening.  Replace evening coffee with chamomile tea, which canreduce anxiety, calm the digestive system, and relieve muscle tension.  Try eating foods rich in magnesium such as legumes and seeds, dark leafy green vegetables, wheat bran, almonds, cashews, blackstrap molasses, brewer’s yeast, and whole grains.
  • Exercise:  In addition to being critical to your overall physical & mental health, daily exercise helps to rid the body of muscle tension & stress that often prevents a deep sleep.
  • Aromatherapy:  Scents such as lavender can create a more relaxed environment and help you to fall asleep.  Just be sure to find a natural lavender product (such as a dried lavender sachet) & avoid adding chemicals in your home.

heel_neurexan_tabletsIf you still have trouble sleeping, we recommend Heel Neurexan tablets.  Neurexan is a relatively inexpensive, safe, all natural solution for insomnia without side effects or risk of addiction.

Surviving Allergy Season – Naturally

There seems to be quite a bit of buzz on Twitter these days about dealing with the allergy season!  It reminds me a why I chose to live at high altitude in the west – the pollen in the midwest, south, and east coast can be brutal this time of the year.  I’ve probably tried every over-the-counter medication, but they all either put me to sleep, made my heart race, or were ineffective.  Plus, I like to avoid putting anything synthetically derived in a lab into my body unless absolutely necessary!

heel-allergy-relief-kit  We’re fortunate at Natural Mountain Health to have found a kit from Heel (a worldwide leader for over 70 years in homeopathic, natural relief) that helps with everything from itchy eyes, sneezing, hives, & runny nose.

In addition to the ingredients found in the allergy relief kit, here are a few other naturally occurring substances that might be worth a try:

  • Grape Seed Extract & Quercetin (Both abundant in red wine)
  • Vitamin C
  • Spice up your foods w/ cayenne pepper, hot ginger, onion, garlic, and fenugreek
  • Saline Nasal Spray

Things to avoid?

  • Any foods that cause even a mild allergic reaction or stomach upset (avoidance will lessen the burden on your immune system so it can focus more on fighting your seasonal allergies)
  • Melon, banana, cucumber, sunflower seeds, chamomile, and supplements with echinacea (if you suffer from ragweed or other weed pollen allergies)
  • Pollen counts can be highest during early morning hours, so try to avoid activity outside during this time
  • Wear a dust mask while mowing the lawn, gardening, or any other activity that exposes you directly to pollen
  • Don’t mix natural treatments with over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking to your doctor first.  It’s also important to follow dosage directions carefully, even for natural supplements!
